The Umayyads extended the Islamic territory from his capital, Damascus, to the borders of the Western world. At the beginning of the 7th Century their troops reached the Atlantic Ocean. They conquered the Iberian Peninsula from the North of Africa, it became an Umayyad province. The fall of the Umayyad dynasty, made Abd ar-Rahman I escape to Córdoba where he created an independent Emirate.
